Note | By Lisa Ruppe (Vera's granddaughter) Visited my grandma on May 25, 2011 and sowed her some pics and asked her some questions to get a better sense of her past. Grandma and Grandpa got married at a preachers house in Wynnewood... Grandma went to school with her Uncle Paul Van, brother Jess, cousin Gene French and future sister in law Clota Ruppe. She recalls one tornado were she had to sit in the cement storm cellar. Cecil was out of town working, and Mr Ruppe came over to make sure she was in the storm cellar. She remembers sitting down there with 2 or so kids. Grandpa came home by midnight to make sure they were all ok..He was mad that she wasn't still in the storm cellar, but she said it was safe now to be back in the house. One of my favorite pic is of grandma on the bike when she was younger. She said she would take pics of her on bikes, but never really road them. She said she wasn't very good at riding a bike. She also didn't like to ride the horses that were on the farm either, unless she had to. Once a month, someone in the neighborhood would clear out there front room, and everyone would gather and dance. Grandma was shy and wouldn't always willingly dance, but when she was dating a the Wimberly boy, he would drag her out there on the dance floor. Her uncle Paul Van Sr and some Wimberly's would play the guitar and fiddle on the porch at night, that was when Hattie and grandma were in the kitchen doing the dishes from dinner. They would move the table and chairs and dance in the kitchen to the music. grandma's grandma Mary Ann would come and ask what they were doing and to stop and get the dishes done. Paul Van jokingly would say, you are married now Hattie you aren't supposed to dance. Grandma would say, she can dance with me if she wants to... Grandma thought her grandpa and grandma were an odd couple. He was so tall and she was so short. She said her grandpa was a very nice man. She said her and Hattie were always joking around. Hattie would always mimic what cities girls looked like cleaning the table, and then would mimic what country girls look like cleaning the table. But, grandma said she and Hattie would always have so much fun together... She remembered Bozo Baxter. she said he was working hard on a farm to save money so he could buy himself a Palomino horse. Once he bought that horse, he would ride it everywhere. |
